Many of Marshall's 2nd grade artists entered the Sooper Art Contest at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. The Sooper Art Contest is a contest based on the environmentally conscious themed book, Sooper Yooper. This book, of course, takes place in the Upper Peninsula.

It has been another amazing year of art. Each year I am so impressed by the kiddos' creativity and energy. I ended the year on maternity leave, I had a beautiful baby girl. Here are a few pictures of what we were up to before I left. 4th graders completed their Pop Art cup cake art, here are a few more pictures. 1st graders created jungles inspired by Henri Matisse. 2nd graders created abstract and realistic fish. They also explored water color. Kindergarteners completed their Lions and Monet gardens. 3rd graders loved weaving! 2nd graders got creative with the leftover tiny pencils. 1st graders learned about printmaking and Andy Warhol. Mrs. Allan's class made Spring bunnies. Later, they created firefly art work.
I am so sorry it has been so long since an update! Well, we have been working hard in the art room, so much has been going on.... Mrs. Allan's class created Batiks. They created lines out of glue, let it dry, then painted their fabric. After soaking, the glue came out, leaving interesting white lines in their dyed fabric. 4th grade artists created cup cake sculptures, and drew them realistically. They learned about artists Wayne Thiebaud and Claes Oldenburg. In 2nd grade we talked about the difference between abstract and realistic art. We explored water color and 2nd grade artists will have the choice to create abstract or realistic fish over their backgrounds. This project was also used to enter into the Sooper Yooper art contest at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. After creating their Kente Cloths, 1st grade artists looked at Henri Rousseau's jungles. They are creating their own jungles and will be adding a tiger to it. Kindergarten artists are preparing painted paper for the mane of their lion. DK artists were able to explore printmaking with mono prints.
The artists as Marshall always impress me! In February, I selected 5 artworks to enter into a regional art competition. It was hard to select only 5, but these following artists put in extra hard work and wrote thoughtful artist statements. More winter updates from more grades coming soon!
We are staying busy creating in the art room. Take a look below for a few examples of what we are working on. To see our finished work, please visit the Marshall Art gallery on Artsonia. http://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=62618 1st-4th are learning and reviewing the color wheel. HAPPY NEW YEAR Marshall Elementary! It's already time for a new school year to begin (how did that happen?!). Well, we're going to get the year started off right. We do the usual, go over the rules and routines on the first day, but that gets boring after a few minutes (for Mrs. Fischer too). So we definitely will be getting our hands into some art! I am making a point to show the students living, active, unusual artists on the first day. Both artists participated in ArtPrize at some point, giving them a connection to our community. This year I want to really emphasize that art does not need to look perfect. I want kids to know that art can be our own individual outlet to tell a story. Art teaches creative problem solving skills that carry over into all aspects of our life. So it's not about being "good" or "bad" at art, it's about TRYING and EXPERIENCE!! Here are the artists we are looking at to get our year kicked off: Kelsey Montague Here is her ArtPrize Pate http://www.artprize.org/62388 Her website: http://kelseymontagueart.com/ She even has a coloring book! http://kelseymontagueart.com/coloring-book-3/ Kumi Yamashita Here is her artprize site: http://www.artprize.org/kumi-yamashita
